Mastiha resin is the name of the juice coming out of a tree Pistacia lentiscus. This evergreen tree grows up to 7 meters and can be aged up to 100 years.

 

From incisions made in the bark of the tree flows mastic - an aromatic resin in the form of tears.  Of the hundreds of effective substances were precisely identified around 80. Such multitude probably justifies the multiple uses of Chios mastiha, in the fields of food industry, health and cosmetic care, worldwide.  

 

Since 1997 has Chios Mastiha protected designation of origin (PDO). Due to the unique composition of the soil, warm and humid climate  mastiha is obtained exclusively from the southern part of the island of Chios, in the field Mastichochoria (mastiha village).  

 

Chios mastiha has been recognized since ancient times both for its distinctive aroma and its healing properties. It has been recorded as the first natural chewing gum in the ancient world.

 

Currently, there are many scientific studies that seek to confirm that mastic has very beneficial effects in diseases such as peptic ulcer, atherosclerosis, dental caries and periodontitis, diseases and stomach pain, digestive problems, gastralgia, gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), duedentída (inflammation of the duodenum) and diseases caused by Helicobacter pylori.
